Guyana Dollar ,The Guyanese dollar has been the unit of account in Guyana since January 29, 1839. It was originally conceived as a transitional unit to facilitate the transition from the Dutch guilder currency system to the British pound sterling system. What is the Guyanese Dollar (GYD)? The term Guyanese dollar (GYD) refers to the official currency of Guyana. Created as legal tender in the 1800s, the dollar is printed and backed by the country's central bank, the Bank of Guyana. It is denoted by the symbols $ and G$ and is commonly referred to as GYD in the foreign exchange market. A dollar consists of 100 cents. Banknotes range from US$20 to US$5,000, while coins range from US$1 to US$100. Although the Guyanese dollar is not pegged to any other currency, it is often exchanged for the US dollar. Understanding the Guyanese Dollar (GYD) The Guyanese dollar (GYD) began in 1839 as a transitional currency from the Dutch guilder to the British pound sterling (GBP). The pound has been used in Guyana and other parts of the British West Indies for many years. It lasted mostly until the country gained independence from Britain on 26 May 1966, when the GYD first appeared in its current form. The central bank is responsible for monetary and fiscal policy in the country, as well as the printing and servicing of dollars. The Bank of Guyana was founded in 1965 and is the only institution authorized to issue and redeem banknotes and coins. The bank issues banknotes of 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 and 5000 dollars. Coins are minted in denominations of 1, 5, 10 and 100 US dollars. The exchange rate between the Guyanese dollar and the US dollar is practically unchanged. As of March 31, 2021, one Guyanese dollar was worth $0.0048. This means that it takes about $210 to earn just one full US dollar. Hard currency is widely used in the country, so it's best to have cash with you. Credit cards are rarely used outside of Georgetown's main tourist areas, and foreign cards are generally not accepted at automated teller machines (ATMs). Currency can be exchanged at banks and hotels. But exchange offices or kombuses usually offer better exchange rates. Most retailers in tourist areas, including hotels and restaurants, accept US dollars. Special Considerations Guyana has a population of approximately 785,000 and is located along the North Atlantic coast of South America. The country is known for its rainforests and trade in commodities, especially sugar. More current exports include gold and bauxite, the latter of which is used in aluminum production. In 2015, Exxon Mobil (XOM) discovered an offshore oil field. The company said it expects the reserve to be worth 12 times the national economy. At the opening, the company said it could potentially store 700 million barrels of oil, but raised that estimate to 3.2 billion barrels. Production started in 2019. The company said in 2020 that the facility may not be financially viable, but remains committed to the project. 6.4% Inflation rate in Guyana as of August 2022. By 2021, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita was less than $12,000, equivalent to 87% of the global average. Thus, there is little interest in GYD among currency traders in the global forex market. The trading volume in the list of top currency pairs remains very low. Macau Pataca , The Macanese pataca or Macau pataca (Chinese: 澳門圓; Jyutping: ou3 mun4 jyun4; Portuguese: pataca de Macau; sign: $; abbreviation: P; ISO code: MOP) is the currency of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China. It is subdivided into 100 avos (仙; sin), with 10 avos called ho (毫) in Cantonese. Macau has a currency board system under which the pataca is 100 per cent backed by foreign exchange reserves, in this case currently the Hong Kong dollar (itself backed by the United States dollar). Moreover, the currency board, Monetary Authority of Macau (AMCM), has a statutory obligation to issue and redeem Macau pataca on demand against the Hong Kong dollar at a fixed exchange rate of HK$1 = MOP 1.03, and without limit. The Spanish American silver dollar was in wide use in Asia and the Americas between the 16th to 20th centuries, and was imported by China in large quantities. They were typically minted in Mexico and then brought to the Philippines as part of the Spanish East Indies through the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade to be traded and circulated across the Far East. It was known to the Portuguese as the pataca mexicana. At the end of the 19th century various versions of this silver dollar or pataca were in use in Macau, in the form of Spanish dollars, the British trade dollars of Hong Kong and the Straits Settlements, as well as the silver dollars and fractional coinage of the neighbouring province of Canton. In 1894, the pataca was introduced as a unit of account in Portuguese Macau and Portuguese Timor at a rate of 1 pataca = 450 réis, equivalent to the Mexican Peso or Philippine Peso. In 1901, it was decided to have a uniquely Macau currency, and for that purpose, the Banco Nacional Ultramarino was granted exclusive rights to issue legal tender banknotes that were to be denominated in patacas. On January 27, 1906, pataca notes in denominations of 1, 5, 50 and 100 were introduced and all foreign coinage was outlawed, the idea being to make the pataca paper notes the sole legal tender currency in Macau. However, the Chinese, being so accustomed to using silver for barter, were suspicious of this new paper money, and as such, the paper pataca always circulated at a discount in relation to the silver dollar coins. On the contrary, a similar action at exactly the same time in the Straits Settlements, and for the same purpose, had the different effect of putting the new Straits dollar into the gold exchange standard. Hence both the Macau pataca and the Straits dollar were launched at a sterling value of 2 shillings and 4 pence, but where the Straits dollar remained at that value until the 1960s, the Macau pataca fluctuated with the value of silver, just like the Hong Kong unit. In 1935, when Hong Kong and China abandoned the silver standard, the Hong Kong unit was pegged to sterling at a rate of 1 shilling and 3 pence, while the Macau pataca was pegged to the Portuguese escudo at a rate of MOP 1 = Esc 5$50. This meant that the Macau pataca was worth only 1 shilling and was therefore at a discount of 3 pence in relation to the Hong Kong unit. The first exclusively Macau coinage was not introduced until the year 1952, which happened to be the year after the last pataca fractional coins were minted for East Timor. In that year in Macau, denominations below 10 patacas were replaced by coins.
