Italian Lira
Italy Lira , The lira (/ˈlɪərə/;[a] plural lire[b] ) was the currency of Italy between 1861 and 2002. It was first introduced by the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy in 1807 at par with the French franc, and was subsequently adopted by the different states that would eventually form the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. It was subdivided into 100 centesimi (singular: centesimo), which means "hundredths" or "cents". The lira was also the currency of the Albanian Kingdom from 1941 to 1943. The term originates from libra, the largest unit of the Carolingian monetary system used in Western Europe and elsewhere from the 8th to the 20th century. The Carolingian system is the origin of the French livre tournois (predecessor of the franc), the Italian lira, and the pound unit of sterling and related currencies. In 1999 the euro became Italy's unit of account and the lira became a national subunit of the euro at a rate of €1 = Lit. 1,936.27, before being replaced as cash in 2002. The Carolingian monetary system divided the libra into 20 solidi (singular: solidus) or 240 denarii (singular: denarius). These units translate in Italian to lira, soldo and denaro; in French to livre, sou and denier; and in English to pound, shilling and penny. In France, the "franc" referred to a coin worth one livre tournois. This term was also adopted in various Gallo-Italic languages in north-western Italy to refer to the Italian lira. There was no standard sign or abbreviation for the Italian lira. The abbreviations Lit. (standing for Lira italiana) and L. (standing for Lira) and the sign ₤ or £ were all accepted representations of the currency. Banks and financial institutions, including the Bank of Italy, often used Lit. and this was regarded internationally as the abbreviation for the Italian lira. Handwritten documents and signs at market stalls would often use "£" or "₤" while coins used "L." Italian postage stamps mostly used the word Lire in full but some (such as the 1975 monuments series) used "L." The name of the currency could also be written in full as a prefix or a suffix (e.g. Lire 100,000 or 100,000 Lire). Find out more from wikipedia
British Pound
United Kingdom Pound,UK,England,Northern Ireland,Scotland,Wales,Falkland Islands,Gibraltar,Guernsey,Isle of Man,Jersey,Saint Helena and Ascension,South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands,Tristan da Cunha ,United Kingdom Pound,UK,England,Northern Ireland,Scotland,Wales,Falkland Islands,Gibraltar,Guernsey,Isle of Man,Jersey,Saint Helena and Ascension,South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands,Tristan da Cunha , The pound (sign: £) is the main unit of sterling, and the word "pound" is also used to refer to the British currency generally, often qualified in international. The pound sterling is the oldest existing currency that dates back to mainland Europe. The name of this currency comes from the Latin word "libra", which means weight and balance. The Bank of England has been the issuing authority for sterling banknotes for over 300 years, and banknotes have gone through many changes over that time. The first pound sterling coin did not appear until 1489 during the reign of Henry VII. Pound sterling notes began to circulate in England shortly after the founding of the Bank of England in 1694 and were originally handwritten notes. The pound continued to operate with its complex system of shillings and pennies until the introduction of the decimal system in 1971. In 1660, coinage was mechanized and design features such as side letters were introduced to eliminate clipping of the money. The pound sterling survives as an independent currency while much of Europe accepts the euro as its common currency, which also seemed like the likely fate of the pound sterling in the early 21st century. As for the "Scottish pound", it existed until the Act of Union of 1707 created a new monetary system based on the value of the pound south of the Scottish border. The Bank of Scotland was created in 1695, just a year after the Bank of England, and still exists today as part of HBOS, a subsidiary of the Lloyds Banking Group based in Edinburgh. Countries using the pound sterling The pound sterling is the official currency of the United Kingdom (consisting of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Current coins and banknotes of the pound sterling There are currently five different denominations of banknotes in circulation: £5, £10, £20 and £50. There are also £1 notes, but these are rare as they are printed in Scotland. All sterling banknotes include some security measures. For more information about them, visit the Bank of England website.
