Seborgan Luigino
Seborga Luigino ,Seborga Luigino , Seborga's local currency, the Seborga luigino, is divided into 100 centesimos. Luigini coins circulate in Seborga alongside the Euro, but no banknotes have been issued. The currency has no value outside of the town. The value of the luigino is pegged to the US dollar at SPL 1 = USD 6.00. The Seborga luigino (code: SPL; symbol: see here) is the local currency of the Principality of Seborga, a micronation located near the border of France and Italy, just above the Ligurian Sea. Its first coins were struck from 1667 to 1671, but recently a new issue entered production from 1994 to 1996. The luigino circulates alongside the euro in the self-proclaimed nation. Even though it is recognized by the regional bank, it has no value outside of Seborga. The city of Seborga is located near the France–Italy border in the Imperia Province of Italy. The municipality became in coexistence with the Principality of Seborga in 1963 by Giorgio Carbone (later Prince Giorgio I), who insisted that the city had been sovereign since 954, and a principality as of 1079. This independent principality was eventually claimed by the Republic of Genoa, and sold to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia on January 20, 1729. In 1815, the Congress of Vienna overlooked Seborga in its redistribution of European territories following the Napoleonic Wars, and it was unmentioned in the Act of Unification for the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. In 1181, the Republic of Genoa extended to take possession of the Lérins Islands, and took control of Seborga in the process. The Genoese continued to claim the city as its own until the 18th century. During this time, the self-proclaimed sovereign state likely used Genoese coinage until 1666, when Seborga issued its own coinage. During the reign of the Piedmont-Sardinia, the kingdom's currencies were likely circulated in the city until the Italian unification in 1861, when the Italian lira was introduced. This currency continued to be issued in Italy until 2002, with the introduction of the euro. However, the Principality of Seborga reestablished its currency in 1994, and it currently circulates alongside the euro within the micronation. Find out more from wikipedia
Ghanaian Cedi
Ghana Cedi , The cedi (/ˈsiːdiː/ SEE-dee) (currency sign: GH₵; currency code: GHS) is the unit of currency of Ghana. It is the fourth historical and only current legal tender in the Republic of Ghana. One cedi is divided into one hundred pesewas (Gp). After independence, Ghana separated itself from the British West African pound, which was the currency of the British colonies in the region. The new republic's first independent currency was the Ghanaian pound (1958–1965). In 1965, Ghana decided to leave the British colonial monetary system and adopt the widely accepted decimal system. The African name Cedi (1965–1967) was introduced in place of the old British pound system. Ghana's first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah introduced Cedi notes and Pesewa coins in July 1965 to replace the Ghanaian pounds, shillings and pence. The cedi bore the portrait of the President and was equivalent to eight shillings and four pence (8s 4d), i.e. one hundred old pence, so that 1 pesewa was equal to one penny. After the February 1966 military coup, the new leaders wanted to remove the face of Nkrumah from the banknotes. The "new cedi" (1967–2007) was worth 1.2 cedis, which made it equal to half of a pound sterling (or ten shillings sterling) at its introduction. Decades of high inflation devalued the new cedi, so that in 2007 the largest of the "new cedi" banknotes, the 20,000 note, had a value of about US$2. The new cedi was gradually phased out in 2007 in favor of the "Ghana cedi" at an exchange rate of 1:10,000. By removing four digits, the Ghana cedi became the highest-denominated currency unit issued in Africa. It has since lost over 90% of its value. Etymology Cedi with a cowry The word cedi is the Akan word for cowry shell. Cowries (plural of cowry) were formerly used as currency in what is now Ghana. The Monetaria moneta or money cowry is not native to West African waters but is a common species in the Indian Ocean. The porcelain-like shells came to West Africa, beginning in the 14th century, through trade with Arab merchants. The first modern coins exclusively used at the Gold Coast were produced in 1796 but cowries were used alongside coins and gold dust as currency until 1901.
