Turkish Lira
Turkey Lira,North Cyprus , Turkey Lira , The lira (Turkish: Türk lirası; sign: ₺; ISO 4217 code: TRY; abbreviation: TL) is the official currency of Turkey and Northern Cyprus. One lira is divided into one hundred kuruş. The lira, along with the related currencies of Europe and the Middle East, has its roots in the ancient Roman unit of weight known as the libra which referred to the Troy pound of silver. The Roman libra adoption of the currency spread it throughout Europe and the Near East, where it continued to be used into medieval times. The Turkish lira, the French livre (until 1794), the Italian lira (until 2002), Syrian pound, Lebanese pound and the pound unit of account in sterling (a translation of the Latin libra; the word "pound" as a unit of weight is still abbreviated as "lb.") are the modern descendants of the ancient currency. The lira was introduced as the main unit of account in 1844, with the former currency, kuruş, remaining as a 1⁄100 subdivision. The Ottoman lira remained in circulation until the end of 1927. First Turkish lira (1923–2005) Both Livre Turque (in French) and تورك لیراسی (in Ottoman Turkish) phrases used on first-issue banknotes. The banknotes of the first and second issue depict Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on the obverse side. This change was done according to the 12 January 1926 issue of the official gazette.[5][6] After Atatürk's death his portrait was replaced with one of İsmet İnönü for the third and fourth issues. Atatürk returned for the fifth issue and all subsequent issues. After periods of the lira pegged to sterling and the franc, a peg of TL 2.8 = US$1 was adopted in 1946 and maintained until 1960, when the currency was devalued to TL 9 = US$1. From 1970, a series of hard, then soft pegs to the dollar operated as the value of the Turkish lira began to fall. The following are based on yearly averages: 1960s – US$1 = TL 9 1970 – US$1 = TL 11.30 1975 – US$1 = TL 14.40 1980 – US$1 = TL 80 1985 – US$1 = TL 500 1990 – US$1 = TL 2,500 1995 – US$1 = TL 43,000 2000 – US$1 = TL 620,000 2001 – US$1 = TL 1,250,000 2005 – US$1 = TL 1,350,000 The Guinness Book of Records ranked the Turkish lira as the world's least valuable currency in 1995 and 1996, and again from 1999 to 2004. The lira's value had fallen so far that one original gold lira coin could be sold for TL 154,400,000 before the 2005 revaluation. Find out more from wikipedia
Guinean Franc
Guinea Franc , What is Guinea Franc (GNF)? GNF is the abbreviation for Guinean franc, the national currency of the Republic of Guinea, a country in West Africa. The Republic of Guinea was formerly known as French Guinea. Today it is often referred to as Guinea-Conakry in reference to the name of its capital to distinguish it from neighboring Guinea-Bissau. As of May 2022, 1 US dollar is equal to approximately 8810 GNF. The GNF is actually the second franc used as the country's currency. Guinea was a French colony and gained independence in 1958. Previously, Guinea used the currency of the CFA franc, which was the currency of the French colonies in Africa from 1945 to 1958. In 1959, after Guinea's independence, the first Guyanese franc was issued as the national currency. It was then replaced by the Guinea Sally, which was used in the country from 1971 to 1985. In 1985, the second Guinean franc replaced the shilling at parity. Guinea's economy is rich in mineral resources, gold, high-quality iron ore and diamonds. In addition, it boasts the world's largest reserves of bauxite, one of the West African country's main exports. However, the country, which has a GDP of $12.3 billion, is experiencing stalled economic growth due to political instability. In addition, the Ebola virus slowed Guinea's economic growth in 2014 and 2015. However, the country's economy shrank by 2.4 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. The most recent year for which official figures are available. GNF and CFA francs Guinea used to be part of the franc territory of the former French colonies, and used the CFA franc as its official currency until independence. Many neighboring countries – a total of 14 West African countries, 12 of which are former French colonies – still use the CFA franc. Together they form the African financial community. The CFA was created in 1945 after World War II, to prevent currency devaluation in French colonies. Previously, currencies in French colonies were pegged to the French franc, which was devalued with the signing of Bretton Woods in 1944. When it was introduced in 1945, the exchange rate was 1 CFA to 1.70 French francs, and in 1948 it was changed from 1 CFA to 2 French francs. When France switched from the French franc to the euro, the currency maintained parity. The current fixed exchange rate of the CFA against the euro is 655.96 CFA francs to 1 euro.
