Bitcoin
BTC , Bitcoin (abbreviation: BTC[a] or XBT[b]; sign: ₿) is a protocol which implements a highly available, public, and decentralized ledger. In order to update the ledger, a user must prove they control an entry in the ledger. The protocol specifies that the entry indicates an amount of a token, bitcoin with a minuscule b. The user can update the ledger, assigning some of their bitcoin to another entry in the ledger. Because the token has characteristics of money, it can be thought of as a digital currency. Bitcoin transactions are verified by network nodes through cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. The cryptocurrency was invented in 2008 by an unknown person or group of people using the name Satoshi Nakamoto. The currency began use in 2009, when its implementation was released as open-source software.: ch. 1  The word "bitcoin" was defined in a white paper published on October 31, 2008. It is a compound of the words bit and coin. Bitcoin is legal in seven of the top ten world economies by GDP in 2022. ] The Library of Congress reports that, as of November 2021, nine countries have fully banned bitcoin use, while a further forty-two have implicitly banned it. A few governments have used bitcoin in some capacity. El Salvador has adopted Bitcoin as legal tender, although use by merchants remains low. Ukraine has accepted cryptocurrency donations to fund the resistance to the 2022 Russian invasion. Iran has used bitcoin to bypass sanctions. In the United States, there is "no intention" to ban Bitcoin. Bitcoin has been described as an economic bubble by at least eight recipients of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. The environmental impact of bitcoin is worth noting. Its proof-of-work algorithm for bitcoin mining is designed to be computationally difficult, which requires the consumption of increasing quantities of electricity, the generation of which has contributed to climate change. According to the University of Cambridge, bitcoin has emitted an estimated 200 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide since its launch, or about 0.04% of all carbon dioxide released since 2009. Bitcoin miners have an economic incentive to use the cheapest forms of energy. Renewable energy is the cheapest form of energy over time, so it is in a Bitcoin miner's economic interest to use the cheaper renewable energy when possible. For instance, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Virunga National Park, in eastern Congo, Africa pays for its operations, using a profitable Bitcoin mining operation powered by the Park's hydroelectric plant. Oil and gas giant Exxon mines Bitcoin using the natural gas flared by oil mining operations to generate their electricity. Mining Bitcoin this way makes use of an otherwise "monumental waste of a valuable natural resource". Still other miners reduce their overall energy bill by using the heat generated by their computers to heat their homes or hot tubs. Design Units and divisibility The unit of account of the bitcoin system is the bitcoin. Currency codes for representing bitcoin are BTC[a] and XBT.[b] : 2  Its Unicode character is ₿. One bitcoin is divisible to eight decimal places. : ch. 5  Units for smaller amounts of bitcoin are the millibitcoin (mBTC), equal to 1⁄1000 bitcoin, and the satoshi (sat), which is the smallest possible division, and named in homage to bitcoin's creator, representing 1⁄100000000 (one hundred millionth) bitcoin. 100,000 satoshis are one mBTC. Guinean Franc
Guinea Franc , What is Guinea Franc (GNF)? GNF is the abbreviation for Guinean franc, the national currency of the Republic of Guinea, a country in West Africa. The Republic of Guinea was formerly known as French Guinea. Today it is often referred to as Guinea-Conakry in reference to the name of its capital to distinguish it from neighboring Guinea-Bissau. As of May 2022, 1 US dollar is equal to approximately 8810 GNF. The GNF is actually the second franc used as the country's currency. Guinea was a French colony and gained independence in 1958. Previously, Guinea used the currency of the CFA franc, which was the currency of the French colonies in Africa from 1945 to 1958. In 1959, after Guinea's independence, the first Guyanese franc was issued as the national currency. It was then replaced by the Guinea Sally, which was used in the country from 1971 to 1985. In 1985, the second Guinean franc replaced the shilling at parity. Guinea's economy is rich in mineral resources, gold, high-quality iron ore and diamonds. In addition, it boasts the world's largest reserves of bauxite, one of the West African country's main exports. However, the country, which has a GDP of $12.3 billion, is experiencing stalled economic growth due to political instability. In addition, the Ebola virus slowed Guinea's economic growth in 2014 and 2015. However, the country's economy shrank by 2.4 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. The most recent year for which official figures are available. GNF and CFA francs Guinea used to be part of the franc territory of the former French colonies, and used the CFA franc as its official currency until independence. Many neighboring countries – a total of 14 West African countries, 12 of which are former French colonies – still use the CFA franc. Together they form the African financial community. The CFA was created in 1945 after World War II, to prevent currency devaluation in French colonies. Previously, currencies in French colonies were pegged to the French franc, which was devalued with the signing of Bretton Woods in 1944. When it was introduced in 1945, the exchange rate was 1 CFA to 1.70 French francs, and in 1948 it was changed from 1 CFA to 2 French francs. When France switched from the French franc to the euro, the currency maintained parity. The current fixed exchange rate of the CFA against the euro is 655.96 CFA francs to 1 euro.
